Morocco: The importance of the Berber language in education

Morocco: The Importance of the Berber Language in Education – The government’s plan to promote Amazigh in schools goes hand in hand with its recognition. As the number of students learning Amazigh—the official name of the Berber language—grows, Morocco is consolidating a process that began over twenty years ago to fully recognize the language as an integral part of the national identity. Today, 40% of public schools teach Amazigh, with over 650,000 students enrolled and nearly 2,000 teachers trained.   The Ministry of Education aims to train 3,000 teachers within the next few years, with the goal of expanding instruction to all schools across the country. A Commitment with a Solid Foundation The increase in the number of dedicated teachers—from 200 in 2021 to 1,850 in 2024—is the result of an institutional commitment that has a solid legal foundation. Article 5 of the 2011 Constitution recognizes Amazigh as an official language of the state, defining it as “the common heritage of all Moroccans without exception.”    This decision reflects not only a cultural vision but also a social need: in Berber communities, speaking one’s own language at school means having access to a more equitable education and to basic services that are truly understandable. And the importance is not limited to the language. The importance of the language is also reflected in the healthcare sector. In many inland areas of the country, where a lack of medical facilities and information particularly disadvantages women, the use of Amazigh can make a difference in understanding preventive health messages.    It was from this awareness that Pobic’s commitment took shape, with a project specifically aimed at Berber women. Activities have included awareness-raising sessions on women’s health, education on the prevention of communicable and chronic diseases, and promotion of access to basic checkups and prenatal care.    Intervening in these contexts is not just a health issue: it means strengthening women’s roles in the community and contributing—through active listening and language—to structural and lasting change. Morocco: A Health Prevention Project for Berber Women

Morocco: A Health Prevention Project Dedicated to Berber Women Through its humanitarian work, the Pobic association has gained experience in various African contexts: from Uganda to the Ivory Coast, and on to Morocco.   It is precisely in Morocco that, thanks to its knowledge of the region and collaboration with local organizations, the association was able to launch a more structured and targeted health prevention project. A Project in the Heart of Southern Morocco The initiative focused on southern Morocco, a fascinating and complex region where economic progress still coexists with deep social inequalities. Despite significant strides made in recognizing women’s rights, access to adequate health services for the most isolated populations remains limited. In particular, the project targeted Berber women living in villages on the edge of the Sahara Desert, a remote area where living conditions are often extremely harsh and medical care is scarce. Focus on Prevention and Women’s Health The decision to focus the project on Berber women stems from the recognition that, in these contexts, it is often women who bear the greatest burden of inadequate healthcare. Focusing on prevention means not only improving individual health but also strengthening the entire community, given the central role women play in Berber society. The planned activities included: Health awareness campaigns on key women’s health issues; education on the prevention of communicable diseases and chronic conditions; Promoting access to basic screenings and prenatal care. Morocco: A Tug-of-War Between Tradition and Modernity Morocco, a Maghreb country experiencing strong economic growth, still finds itself today having to balance its development with the need to make progress accessible to all segments of the population.Particularly in rural and desert areas, where Berber communities keep centuries-old traditions alive, essential services—including healthcare—struggle to reach them.   Through this project, Pobic has chosen to focus its efforts where the need is greatest, promoting the right to health as a fundamental prerequisite for genuine human and social progress.   THANKS TO YOUR SUPPORT, WE SAVE THE LIVES OF DOZENS OF CHILDREN EVERY YEAR.
