Pobic is also launching the “Open Heart” project in Uganda, where it is creating a new maternal and child health project focused on pregnancy. From April 18 to 22, 2016, a Pobic delegation, comprised of president Paolo Novellini, project manager Festus Adedayo, gynecologist and Brescia City Council member for health Donatella Albini, midwife and president of the Brescia College of Midwives Antonella Novaglio, and friend and veterinarian Manuela Fazia, visited the country.
The trip was made to fine-tune the two new projects in collaboration with a local association, the Rena Foundation. This organization is active in the Rwenzori region of western Uganda, and Pobic learned of them last winter through a chance encounter. Through Manuela Fazia, who previously spent many months in Uganda and is a member of the association Pianeta Viola, Pobic was introduced to Reverend Fred Tusingire. Reverend Tusingire, the founder of Rena, has built schools in his native village of Mahyoro, as well as the “Good Hope” center. This center functions as a clinic providing basic healthcare services to the local population, with laboratories for Malaria and HIV-Aids testing, and a maternity ward. This specific area falls within Pobic's project, which aims to enhance the services offered to local women in terms of pregnancy care, childbirth assistance, prevention, and training.

For an initial assessment, Pobic therefore organized the trip of the past few days, which was sponsored by the Municipality of Brescia and which brought the two female doctors from Brescia to the clinic in the village of Mahyoro, where they were able to assess the needs of the facility and the requests of the women who use it. Albini and Novaglio made their expertise available for an entire day, examining about thirty women out of the over one hundred who had come to the Rena clinic, where there is a severe lack of equipment: there isn't even a simple tape measure to measure the size of a woman's belly! In fact, the clinic only has a stethoscope, a half-broken delivery bed, an ultrasound machine, and little else.
The Ugandan NGO, in the preceding days, had spread word of the presence of Italian doctors and the possibility of being examined by them for free: a unique opportunity for the local women, many of whom are extremely poor and cannot even afford a check-up during one of the many pregnancies they carry throughout their lives.
Pobic has entered into a collaboration agreement with Rena, both to recover medical equipment and for training, which means offering local midwives and staff the necessary knowledge to deal with the most common maternity-related issues.
The most serious cases will be transferred from the clinic in Rena, Mayhor village, to the nearest hospital, located in the town of Ibanda. There are plans to establish a twinning relationship with this facility, and in this regard, agreements have been made with the health director (met during the mission). These agreements are not only to support the women who are users of Rena but also for the training and updating of local doctors through exchanges with Italy and Brescia.
“Thanks to the intense, strenuous, and very important work of the two doctors from Brescia, we have outlined a training plan to be developed in collaboration with Rena and the Ibanda hospital,” stated Pobic President Paolo Novellini. His assessment of the first trip to Uganda and the launch of the projects was very positive: “a trip that produced results beyond expectations: we found a very important partner NGO, the Rena Foundation, which needs to be helped in its operational development. For this reason, Pobic will be able to provide concrete and effective assistance by activating the project related to pregnancy and launching the “Open Heart” project, which we have been carrying out in Nigeria for years.”.
“Cuore Aperto” is also active in Uganda, where the local NGO Rena identifies cases to be entrusted to the Italian NGO, which covers the financial and logistical costs of the trip, the organization of hospitalization and surgery, and the post-operative care for the young patient and their mother. Two girls have been identified by Rena and are included in the project: Mirias Amutuhaire and Allen Kumujuni, both met at their homes with their families.
Mirias Amutuhaire, born on February 28, 2007, lives with her parents, 2 sisters, and 1 brother in Mbarara. In 2014, the family discovered the child's illness, a heart condition for which she needs surgery. Thanks to Pobic, the father and mother can hope for their little one's future.
