Ivory Coast: 4 ambulances donated for the Emergency Transport project

In 2012, the Pobic association launched an operational project for the development of emergency medical transport in the province of Bongouanou, Ivory Coast. The mission focused on providing rescue vehicles and creating the first organized local emergency system.

The starting situation

At the beginning of the mission, the health and logistical conditions in the area were extremely precarious. There was no operational ambulance system available throughout the entire province. Patients in need of urgent care were transported in vehicles lacking any health safety standards, often forced to endure hours-long journeys on unpaved and damaged roads. The rainy season further aggravated the situation, rendering many communication routes impassable and increasing risks in emergency cases.

Pobic's intervention

To address this issue, Pobic implemented a structured program that included:

The donation of four ambulances fully equipped.
The technical training of local personnel designated for the management of rescue vehicles.
He strengthening of emergency procedures, through the introduction of first aid protocols.

The ambulances were delivered directly to the Bongouanou hospital and peripheral health facilities.
During the transfer journey, one of the vehicles was used to rescue an injured person in a road accident, immediately confirming the necessity and effectiveness of the intervention.

Objectives and results achieved

The main goal of Emergency Transport was reduce healthcare service waiting times for the populations of rural areas, thus improving the chance of survival in emergency cases.

Within a few months of activating the service, the following was recorded:

One improvement in the management of medical transport,
One increase in public confidence toward hospital facilities,
One greater responsiveness by the local health system in emergency situations.

Furthermore, staff training has made it possible to ensure the correct management of vehicles and to establish basic emergency management skills, fostering a greater operational autonomy.

Conclusion

The Emergency Transport project marked a fundamental step in Pobic's strategy in Ivory Coast: not only providing material resources, but also strengthen local capacities, creating a concrete and lasting impact on the public health of the region.

With targeted interventions tailored to the real needs of the area, it was possible to launch the first embryonic rescue network in one of the most disadvantaged areas of the country.
