Yenagoa – capital of Bayelsa State, Nigeria – is a city with strong ties to POBIC.
A place of a thousand contradictions, where natural resources and beauty stand in stark contrast to the extreme social hardship.
In this place, Pobic has created a home to welcome women in need.
Single mothers, girls trying to escape a life of hardship.
A project we were very passionate about and which has been a reality since 2021.
“Solidarity is the building of a society based on reciprocity, equality of opportunity, and the participation of all.”
Within our shelter in Bayelsa, in addition to providing assistance sanitary and support food, we are committed to offering girls a concrete opportunity for their future.
Among the educational paths offered, we have chosen to focus on tailor shop, a highly demanded profession in the Niger Delta.
In this region, in fact, tailoring skills not only meet a practical need, such as repairing garments, but also become a means of creative expression, despite the difficult economic conditions.
Through this project, we want to offer young mothers – many of whom flee situations of violence, exploitation, or marginalization – the possibility of building an independent future.
Teaching them a trade means providing them with a precious tool for their emancipation, a way to allow them to break free from cycles of hardship and redemption.
“Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.”.
It is in this spirit that we promote the tailoring course, to contribute to their personal and professional development.
Our shelter, located in the beating heart of the Niger Delta, represents a beacon of hope and rebirth for many young women in situations of extreme vulnerability.
It is not just a physical place, but a true refuge where healthcare, psychological support, and concrete opportunities for the future intertwine.
The value of this project has also been recognized by the Governor of Bayelsa State (one of Nigeria's federal states), who has shown his deep appreciation for our work on several occasions.
During the various meetings we had with him, the governor strongly emphasized the importance of initiatives like ours, capable of positively transforming the lives of young mothers who have difficult histories of violence or marginalization behind them.
He praised our commitment to providing not only immediate support but also tools for a more stable and dignified future, such as vocational training.
Each time, he has renewed his appreciation for the mission we are carrying out, underscoring how crucial our contribution is to improving the social conditions of the region.
A recognition that is an incentive to continue expanding our project.
Thanks to numerous donations and the work of many volunteers, we have so far helped over 300 children in 7 international cooperation missions.
With your support, we can do more and more.
