Accra's National Cardiothoracic Centre unites against RHD in Ghana

On June 30th, the Pobic NGO and the National Cardiothoracic Centre of Accra (Ghana) signed a three-year international collaboration agreement aimed at combating Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) in Ghanaian children.

With over 40 million estimated cases worldwide and 300,000 deaths each year – especially in low- and middle-income countries – RHD is a preventable yet often neglected condition. The new partnership brings together Pobic’s expertise in accessing and managing European and Italian funds, and the clinical expertise of the Accra Centre, to create a replicable model for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

What does the agreement provide for

  • Epidemiological mapping: start of a study to assess the actual spread of RHD in the most vulnerable areas of Ghana.

  • Widespread awareness raising: distribution of educational materials to schools, families, and communities for the early recognition of streptococcus symptoms, the triggering factor of the disease.

  • Enhance diagnostics: provide throat swabs and other screening tools to local health centers, along with the training of operators and technicians.

  • Strengthen caresupport for the implementation of treatment protocols and an antibiotic prophylaxis program to block the progression of the disease.

  • Shared governanceestablishment of a task force and a joint Management Committee to coordinate operations, fundraising, and transparent reporting.

We believe that only by working side by side with local communities and professionals can we eradicate a disease that, until recently, seemed like an inevitable fate for too many children,”
Attorney Paolo Novellini
President of POBIC NGO

Why it is important

  • Early intervention
Promptly identifying and treating streptococcal infections drastically reduces the risk of heart valve damage, avoiding long-term disability.

  • Training and local capacity
Building skills locally means leaving a sustainable “know-how” even after the agreement expires.

  • Access to new resources
With Pobic as the partner lead applicant, the project will be able to draw on European and Italian public and private funding, expanding its operational capacity in Ghana.

This agreement reaffirms Pobic's commitment to promoting health and dignity in the neediest contexts, thanks to the synergy with local institutions and the sharing of international best practices.
