Between March 21 and 23, 2025, a Pobic delegation took its first official steps in Ghana. President Paolo Novellini and Festus Adedayo traveled to the capital, Accra, for a series of strategic institutional meetings, laying the groundwork for a new collaboration in the field of rheumatic heart disease prevention.
The mission saw Pobic directly confront representatives of the Ghana Ministry of Health and the medical team of the National Cardiothoracic Centre, the country's leading cardiac hospital. A particularly significant meeting was the one with the director of cardiac surgery, Dr. (Med) Kow Entsua-Mensah, a leading figure in Ghanaian healthcare.
During the working days, there was extensive discussion about the situation of cardiac surgery in the country, but above all about the need to build a shared action to address an often underestimated problem: the rheumatic heart disease, which in Ghana particularly affects children between 3 and 14 years old.
The main request made to Pobic was clear: to help develop a screening protocol to measure the prevalence of rheumatic heart disease in the pediatric population. A fundamental step not only to understand the real impact of the pathology at the national level, but also to allow Ghana to sharing data and strategies with the other countries of the African continent, with a view to broader health cooperation.
The collection of this data, in fact, will have a dual value: on the one hand, it will provide the Ghanaian authorities with a concrete tool to plan prevention and treatment interventions; on the other, it will allow Ghana to fully integrate into international initiatives aimed at eradicating rheumatic fever in sub-Saharan Africa.
Therefore, the March mission represents only the first step.
However, it is already clear that the humanitarian aid Pobic will carry out in Ghana will not be limited to occasional interventions: it will move on a solid scientific basis, with the aim of building prevention, early diagnosis, and long-term support projects.
