What is happening between Russia and Ukraine?
Starting Thursday, February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with airstrikes, missile strikes, and ground attacks on several Ukrainian cities.
This invasion is the latest escalation of an ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine that has lasted for years.

Donbas: the focal point of the Russian offensive
Russian forces are concentrating their efforts in the Donbas, with the goal of capturing the entire Donetsk and Luhansk provinces controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
Clashes are intensifying around the cities of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, and Severodonetsk, where heavy shelling and hand-to-hand combat are taking place.
The Russian advance is slow and arduous, encountering strong resistance from Ukrainian troops, who use their knowledge of the terrain to their advantage. Russia's use of heavy artillery and missiles causes extensive damage to cities and civilian infrastructure, resulting in numerous casualties among the population.
Southbound: Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kherson
In the south of the country, Ukrainian forces launched a counteroffensive in the Kherson region, successfully retaking some towns previously occupied by the Russians.
Fighting is concentrated in the city of Kherson, the regional capital, which is still under Russian control.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive is favored by the supply of Western weapons, including Javelin and Stinger missiles, which make it possible to strike Russian tanks and other armored vehicles with precision. The retaking of Kherson would represent a significant symbolic victory for Ukraine and could weaken the Russian position in the south of the country.
Bombardments across the country
Although attention is focused on the Donbas, Russia continues to bomb Ukrainian cities across the country, even those far from the conflict zones.
These attacks indiscriminately hit residential areas, schools, hospitals, and other civilian infrastructure, causing a massacre of civilians and a severe humanitarian crisis.
The hardest-hit cities include Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city; Mariupol, which has been almost completely razed to the ground; and Odesa, a major port on the Black Sea.

A desperate situation: what we at POBIC are doing
In view of this dramatic situation, all efforts are indispensable.
Suffice it to say that a city seemingly outside the conflict, such as Nemirov, has seen its social structure devastated over the past year.
Three available ambulances in the center of about 15,000 inhabitants were entirely destroyed.
This is what remains of the only ambulance in the city of Nemirov, Ukraine.
A part of a Russian missile, partially destroyed by Ukrainian forces, fatally crashed into the emergency rescue vehicle. For a community like Nemirov, a very serious social tragedy.
This is why, as Pobic, on a purely emergency basis, we donated an ambulance that was decommissioned in Italy, but remains fully functional. Professor Mikola Segeda, president of the Pobic Ukraine Foundation, took it upon himself to drive the vehicle to its destination.
This is only a first step.
Ukraine: Pobic's next step
If you have been following us for a while, you know about our deep bond with the Ukrainian people.
Despite what you might hear on TV or social media, the situation is more dramatic than ever. The Pobic reception house set up in the Nemirov area is proving to be totally inadequate for the huge number of displaced people who—having left their homes—are seeking safety by fleeing.
We are creating a plan to truly help in this crisis that is shattering lives and turning a nation like Ukraine into a people of the homeless.
A first step will be practical help.
We purchased an additional ambulance to be sent to Ukraine, which will follow the one we already sent a few months ago.The situation is terrible for our Ukrainian brothers.
We are preparing something very important and we will tell you about it soon.
War between Ukraine and Russia: Future prospects
The outcome of the conflict is still uncertain. Russia has military superiority in terms of men and armaments, but Ukraine has shown strong resistance and determination to defend its country.
The course of the war could depend on several factors, including the continued flow of Western weapons to Ukraine, the evolution of troop morale on both fronts, and the possible escalation of the conflict into a broader war between Russia and NATO.
Diplomats continue to seek a peaceful solution to the crisis, but no significant progress has been made at this time.
What is really important, however, is that we must and want to contribute to helping all those people who have seen their lives destroyed by a conflict they did not want. To help those children who, in the ferocity of war, are abandoned by humanity.
I am in a desperate condition and we are doing everything in our power to help in this humanitarian catastrophe.
