A complex and fruitful initiative, born in collaboration with\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Rena-Foundation, an organization active in the Rwenzori region of western Uganda.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>A reality aimed at protecting pregnant women who constantly risk their lives due to poor hygienic and sanitary conditions.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Let's tell the story of that trip at this link:\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pobic.org\/en\/pobic-for-women\/pobic-for-woman-uganda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project Pobic For Women \u2013 She got up at 6 AM to reach the Uganda Heart Institute in Kampala. The baby hasn't slept more than three hours a night, sweats often, and isn't gaining weight. She has an atrioventricular canal that can cause heart failure, little life expectancy. Or rather, she did. vivid memories of the warm welcome they received in Italy when they arrived for little Simon's heart surgery. \u201cThe idea of leaving with my son, who was only 10 months old, for a distant country without relatives worried me,\u201d says Teopisca.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPobic's team picked us up at the airport and right away I felt that everything would go well.\u201d And so it did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the operation at the Gaslini Pediatric Hospital in Genoa, Teopisca saw her son again: \u201cthat joy in his eyes meant everything to me.\u201d One year after the operation, Simon was revisited by doctors from Gaslini on a Pobic mission in Jireh MUGISA, born on March 17, 2022, in Uganda, with Tetralogy of Fallot, arrived in Italy with his mother, Ms. Teopista Ochora, on January 26, 2023, and was admitted to the Gaslini Pediatric Hospital in Genoa on January 27, 2023.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">He was operated on by the team led by Dr. Francesco Santoro on 02\/06\/2023 and was<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Discharged on 02\/28\/2023.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">After a successful recovery, Simon and his mother returned to Uganda on 03\/06\/2023.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p><p>When Simon Jireh Mugisa arrived in Italy on January 26, 2023, his condition was delicate due to Tetralogy of Fallot, a serious congenital heart disease that compromised the proper flow of blood to his lungs and the rest of his body.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The little one had faced the first few months of his life with significant respiratory difficulties and constant fatigue.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Simon couldn't play or move like the other children; his movements were limited by his shortness of breath and cyanosis, a blue coloring of his lips and nails, typical of children with this condition.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The medical team, led by Dr. Francesco Santoro, prepared carefully for a delicate and complex operation, aware of the importance of this intervention for little Simon's The Pobic Uganda team met with dozens of families at the Heart Institute hospital in the capital, Kampala, and organized a gathering with those who had already made the trip to Italy for their children\u2019s surgeries. The professionalism of the local hospital team and the warm Ugandan hospitality helped make the mission a huge success! Over fifty appointments were held, and on every face was the hope of being able to participate in the OPEN HEART project. Becoming a singer is just one of the dreams she hopes to fulfill after heart surgery.\u00a0 \u00a0 Martha Ariana, along with her mother Doreen Akello, participated in the screening days at the Uganda Heart Institute in Kampala, where they met with doctors from the Gaslini Hospital in Genoa for a cardiology consultation. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cBeing 13 and having heart problems makes you feel a little different,\u2019 says Martha Ariana. \u201dBut today I\u2019m going home with hope.\u201c Fatia Nakazibwe holds her little Ariela in her arms. She got up at 6 a.m. to make her way to the Uganda Heart Institute in Kampala. But that\u2019s not the longest journey she\u2019s ever taken. Six months before this appointment, she gave birth to Ariela, and since then, every smile has come at a cost. The baby sleeps no more than three hours a night, sweats frequently, and isn\u2019t gaining weight. She has an atrioventricular canal defect that can lead to heart failure and a short life expectancy. Or rather, she did. On the morning she woke up at dawn, Fatia set out in search of hope.\u00a0 \u00a0 Ariela, along with her mother Fatia, will be able to undergo surgery at one of the leading pediatric cardiology hospitals in Genoa.  The tiny body of Evangelina Alma, just one month old, is inseparable from that of her mother Sophia. \u00a0 3 kg, 50 cm, and an oxygen saturation level of 81%: these are the concerning statistics that make Evangelina Alma a good candidate for the upcoming surgeries as part of the Pobic mission at the Uganda Heart Institute in the capital, Kampala.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u201dI haven\u2019t been able to sleep at all since she was born,\u201c says her mother, \u201dher temperature often spikes, so I have to keep checking on her.\u201c \u00a0 But when she breastfeeds her\u2014even for just a few minutes\u2014little Sophia is fine. Her eyes light up after meeting Dr. Gagliardi, a member of the Pobic mission, who performed the echocardiogram on the baby. \u00a0 Ugandan children alive thanks to the OPEN HEART UGANDA project Teopisca and Simon (see his story below) vividly remember the warm welcome they received in Italy when they landed for little Simon\u2019s heart surgery. \u201dThe idea of traveling with my son, who was only 10 months old, to a distant country with no relatives worried me,\u201c says Teopisca.   \u201dThe Pobic team picked us up at the airport, and right away I felt that everything would turn out for the best.\u201c And so it was.    After the surgery at the Gaslini Children\u2019s Hospital in Genoa, Teopisca saw her son again: \u201dThat joy in his eyes meant everything to me.\u201c A year after the surgery, Simon was re-examined by Gaslini doctors on a Pobic mission in Uganda.\u00a0 When Miria was 9 years old, she underwent surgery at the Gaslini Hospital in Genoa for a heart defect.   She had trouble breathing and sweated a lot.   \u201dThe surgery changed my life,\u201c says Miria. \u201dEven though I loved studying, I could never seem to concentrate.
